Chapter Five

HARRY STOOD at the carousel in the baggage claim area watching the luggage go around and around. Nothing remotely resembling his bags appeared, and after fifteen minutes, the entire carousel stopped, so Harry sat on the edge and waited. He rubbed his sweaty palms on his blue jeans and ran his fingers through his hair. His stomach was queasy, and he had a headache. Both could be the result of all the Crown and Cokes he had on the airplane to try and keep his nerves in check, but that was highly unlikely. He knew deep down why he felt the way he did. And he’d had a very long flight to decide what he was going to do about it.

He shook his head at this bizarre turn of events. What a difference a day makes, he thought. Yesterday I was coming to Cabo with my wife to celebrate a friend’s wedding, hoping to avoid an awkward scene with someone who could never be anything more to me than a bittersweet memory. And today I’m a soon-to-be single gay man with hopes that just maybe that bittersweet memory might accept my sincere apologies and give me another chance to do what I should have done so many years ago.

Harry jumped when the alarm sounded, lights flashed, and the carousel started moving again. He stood and watched the belt until his bags finally appeared. He went through customs, found his name on a sign, and in under an hour, he was en route to the villa.

As the sedan cruised along the corridor, Harry gazed out the car window, paying special attention to the late afternoon sun as it reflected off the royal blue water. He thought back to his flight, when he’d tried to imagine every possible scenario Lee would throw at him so as to not be caught off guard without a good argument to defend himself.

Of course, in reality, there was no real defense. He’d been a coward, and his actions had hurt two people for whom he genuinely cared. Nonetheless, he tried to prepare himself for any possible outcome.

The most probable option was that Lee would still hate him and wouldn’t give him the time of day. Lee was good at that when he made his mind up about something. A less probable option was that Lee was no longer mad at him, had long ago released the hurt and anger Harry had caused him, and wanted nothing more from him than a possible friendship. The most farfetched and least probable option was that Lee still had feelings for him and they might just be able to start over again.

Before he knew it, the sedan was pulling through a security gate and starting an ascent up a series of switchbacks. The car pulled up in front of villa eighteen and the driver came around and opened his door. When Harry’s feet hit the pavement, his knees were shaking so badly he felt certain he would hit the ground.
